Frangokastello, Chania, Crete
Frangokastello Beach is a serene coastal destination located on the southern coast of Crete, approximately 12 km east of Chora Sfakion. The beach is renowned for its soft golden sands and shallow, turquoise waters, making it ideal for families with children. The beach stretches for about 492 metres, offering ample space for relaxation. It is partially organized, providing amenities such as sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, and is complemented by nearby taverns serving local cuisine. The beach is sheltered and gently shelving, which enhances its suitability for young swimmers. However, visitors should be aware that the area can experience occasional katabatic winds from the north, which may cause the fine sand to be blown around. Overlooking the beach is the historic 14th-century Venetian fortress, Frangokastello, which adds a unique historical backdrop to the natural beauty of the area. The castle has a rich history, having served as a garrison during the Venetian occupation and later playing a role in the Greek War of Independence. A local legend speaks of the "Drosoulites" or "dew-men," shadowy figures said to appear at dawn around the anniversary of a significant battle in 1828.
