Gramvousa

Gramvousa is a cluster of islands located in the northwest of Crete, near Chania. Consisting of two main islands, Imeri Gramvousa and Agria Gramvousa, it is known for its rich history, imposing fortress and beautiful beaches.Imeri Gramvousa is the most visited of the two islands and is home to the Venetian fortress of Gramvousa. The fortress, built in the 16th century, stands imposingly on a rock and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Agria Gramvousa is an uninhabited island of wild beauty. It is known for its rugged coastlines and beaches with turquoise waters.You can reach Gramvousa by boat from Kissamos and there are several companies that offer tours to Gramvousa and Balos.

• Boat or carBoat from Kissamos avoids the dirt-road drive but follows boat schedules. Driving gives flexibility, but expect a rough road, parking pressure, and a walk down and back up.
• Road and walkIf you drive, wear proper shoes and allow time for the descent, the return climb, and the queue out of the parking area.
• Facilities and shadeTreat Balos like a remote beach day: limited shade, limited facilities, and no easy last-minute supplies once you are there.
• Wind and crowdsGo early or late when possible, check wind before boat days, and avoid tight evening plans after the return.
• Family fitBeautiful but high-friction with small children, pushchairs, or mobility limits. Boat access is usually easier than driving and walking.
