Treis Ekklisies, Herakleion, Crete
The Agios Nikitas Palm Forest is located in the Asterousia Mountains, about 65 km south of Heraklion, near the village of Libyan Gulf. This unique palm grove is the third largest in Crete and hosts the endemic Cretan date palm (Phoenix theophrastii), which grows inland, away from the sea.The creation of the forest is attributed to pirates who, visiting the area, ate dates and discarded the seeds, which then sprouted and formed the grove. The area provides shelter for various plant and animal species, with rich flora and fauna.Access to the palm forest is via a small trail starting from the Monastery of Agios Nikitas and leading down to the ravine that hosts the forest. The area is peaceful and secluded, perfect for hiking and exploration. The Kefalovrisi spring is the main water source for the area, helping to maintain the ecosystem. The area is protected by the Forest Service and is fenced to prevent human intervention and free-roaming animals.The natural beauty and tranquility of the landscape make the Agios Nikitas Palm Forest an excellent destination for nature lovers and those seeking solitude.
