The Arkadi Monastery is one of the most historical and important monuments of Crete. It is located about 23 kilometers east of Rethymnon, at an altitude of 500 meters, and is built on a fertile plateau with olive groves, vineyards and pine trees.The exact date of the monastery's foundation is not known, but it is believed to have been founded by the Emperor Arcadius in the 12th century. According to another version, the monastery is named after a monk Arcadius who founded the monastery in the 16th century.
