Treis Ekklisies, Herakleion, Crete
The Charoupódasos (Carob Forest) of Tris Ekklisies is the largest natural carob tree forest in Europe. Nestled on the wild southern slopes of the Asterousia Mountains, it stretches all the way down to the beaches of Psili Ammos and Ornios. This rare and unique forest, filled with ancient carob trees (Ceratonia siliqua), thrives in the dry, rocky terrain. It is an ideal place for hiking, nature photography, and quiet reflection in one of the most untouched corners of Crete. To reach it, follow the scenic route from Paranymfi village down to Tris Ekklisies, then walk westward over the hills.The area is not only ecologically important but also a living reminder of Cretan agricultural history — carob pods were once known as “Crete’s black gold.”
