Sisi, Lasithi, Crete
Milatos Cave, located about 3 km northeast of Milatos village in eastern Crete, holds significant historical importance. During the Greek War of Independence in 1823, around 2,000-3,600 Greek Christians sought refuge in the cave, but after a 12-day siege, a tragic massacre occurred. The cave is 75 meters long with eight entrances and three horizontal levels. Inside, there’s a small church dedicated to Saint Thomas, built in 1935 to honor the victims. The cave is accessible by a 10-15 minute walk from the village, and visitors should bring flashlights for exploration. The area is quiet, offering a reflective experience for those interested in its history.
