Giouchtas , Herakleion, Crete
Perched on Mount Giouchtas, just above the town of Archanes, this Minoan Peak Sanctuary is one of the most important sacred sites of ancient Crete. From this high vantage point, the Minoans worshipped their gods, leaving behind offerings like clay figurines, idols, and libation tables-many of which have been unearthed during excavations. The sanctuary dates back to the Middle Minoan period (around 1900–1600 BCE) and offers both spiritual and panoramic significance. From the summit, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views over Heraklion, the Archanes vineyards, and the Cretan Sea.The site reflects the Minoans’ deep connection to nature, the mountains, and the divine-believing peaks to be sacred thresholds between earth and sky.
