The Old Plakias Tunnels are a fascinating part of the area’s recent history, located on the hills above Plakias village in southern Crete. Originally built during World War II by occupying forces, the tunnels were intended for military use, such as shelters and storage. Today, they remain as hidden remnants of the past, drawing interest from history buffs and curious explorers. Though not officially maintained or signed, many adventurous visitors hike up to discover their entrances nestled among olive trees and rocky paths. The tunnels stretch into the hillside and vary in size and depth. Some are wide enough to walk through, while others are narrow and overgrown. Entering is at your own risk, and a flashlight is highly recommended. The surrounding landscape offers panoramic views over Plakias Bay, making the short hike worthwhile even without entering the tunnels. These forgotten structures add an air of mystery to the area and remind visitors of the region’s turbulent 20th-century past.
