Splantzia Square

Splantzia is one of the most characteristic and historical districts of Chania. Located on the eastern side of the old town, it is a living canvas that combines Ottoman and Venetian architecture with authentic Cretan tradition.Splanzia got its name from the Venetians, who called it "Splanzia", which means "entrails". It was the district where the Turks lived after the conquest of Crete and strongly preserved the characteristics of the Ottoman period. East of the square is the church of Saint Nikolas, built just before 1320, by the Venetians, as a monastery of the Dominican monks. Today, Splantzia is one of the most popular areas of the city, with traditional cafes, taverns and small shops.
