Souda, ~5 km from Chania
The Allied War Cemetery at Souda Bay is one of Crete’s most moving and historically significant sites. Located near Chania, in a peaceful and well-maintained setting by the sea, it serves as a place of remembrance and respect for the fallen soldiers of World War II.\n\rMore than 1,500 soldiers from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada are buried here, most of whom lost their lives in the Battle of Crete (May 1941), one of the fiercest airborne invasions of the war.The cemetery is immaculately kept, with white crosses and headstones inscribed with the names of the fallen. The serene and simple landscape creates an atmosphere of reflection, making this a site of great historical and emotional significance.
