The Morosini Fountain, commonly known as `The Lions`, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the center of Heraklion, Crete. It was built in 1628 by Francesco Morosini, the Venetian governor of Crete, as part of an elaborate water supply project that brought water from Mount Juktas to Heraklion via aqueduct.
The fountain features an octagonal basin with four majestic lions spouting water from their mouths, and is adorned with carvings of sea creatures and mythological figures. It’s a popular meeting point for both locals and tourists, surrounded by a vibrant square with cafés, restaurants, and shops.
