The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete is located in the heart of Rethymno`s historic Old Town, near the Fortezza fortress. Established in 1992 as the Municipal Gallery `L. Kanakakis,` it is housed in a restored Venetian-era building that once served as a soap factory. The museum`s permanent collection comprises approximately 700 works by contemporary Greek artists from 1950 onwards, encompassing various art movements such as abstraction, neo-expressionism, minimalism, and conceptual art. In addition to its exhibitions, the museum organizes educational programs, workshops, and guided tours for visitors of all ages.
