Tampakaria is a historic district of Chania, located in the Halepa neighborhood, famous for its old leather tanneries. The area developed during the 19th century, when Chania was a major trade and craft center. The tanneries (called “tabakaria”) were built by the sea to use seawater in the leather processing.
Most of the workshops are now abandoned or have been transformed into modern art spaces, cafés, or boutique hotels, while maintaining their industrial and nostalgic charm.
